Adobe Photoshop – now 26 years old – is the worldwide gold standard of pro-level image editing production and workflow. So why even consider using another photo editing app? Plenty of reasons: You may not need Photoshop’s heavy-duty firepower or you may not want to invest the time and effort required to scale its learning curve. You might also simply prefer to hold on to your software license without a perpetual monthly fee. Happily, there are some top-notch alternatives to Photoshop for Mac, Windows and Linux that are bound to please shooters of every level. Dear all, A change of DPreview SW reporting range, methods, details and frequency would be welcome. Who cares about 15 years old digital cameras or the best film camera of the 60's?

A side-by side comparison of features might be useful, rather than separate high level reports on individual tools. Affinity is now available for Windows at 49,99 EUR a copy. (I guess same anount in USD or UKP) A bargain for a tool qualified as 'Pro' by this 2016 review. Affinity won in 2015 a prize for best Mac photo editing tool. What is the point of paying for a 'Consumer' product with less features and the same price than a 'Pro' tool??

I just bought Affinity and guess what? Easy to use even for a beginner.

You might not use complex features to start with, but at least you can freely learn and grow with this tool at no additional cost. Regards, Philippe. Why should it work the same as PS?

Besides, there are certain things GIMP does way better than PS and at least a couple of items that PS either does not do at all or does it in a much more complex as well as cumbersome way, which makes it practically useless! In fact, that's the biggest problem with PS: great in some areas, even unique, but so mediocre in other areas one wonders how come that ever happens if Adobe is truly a 'professional' firm specializing in pro graphics and photo / video software? PhotoLine is awesome; have been using it for quite a few years now (since v.13 - and it is now v.19.51 and they do a version upgrade about every two years, so work it out!) and it has just got better and better. One thing I really like about it is that it is very small but does a HUGE variety of tasks (super tight coding - I love using the sharpest tool in the drawer) nsd it is dad easy to install/uninstall so taking he free 30 day fully functional trial is no problem at all.

One thing to remember - the guys who writing it, two German brothers - don't talk about images, only layers. They are engineers, LOL. We all know about the 'Gold Standard' aka Adobe Photoshop. No one knows it better than Adobe and they see fit to price their product accordingly. However, choosing Photoshop does not automatically elevate or designate one as a 'professional'. Naturally, a lot of professionals choose Photoshop because it naturally is the 'professional's choice' but it is not the ONLY choice when it comes graphics and photo processing. I question the motives of this article therefore since it is so heavily slanted towards Adobe.

Corel Paintshop Pro is mainstream, well-known and widely used by casual, amateur and professionals. Its omission lessens the credibility of an article in a professional journal such as DPreview.

I realize a lot of 'best' or 'alternatives' are subjective, but it's not difficult to do a little research and pick out some of the well knowns, such as Xara, Zoner, ACDSee, On1 and everyone's secret tool Faststone Image Viewer. (unknown member) So where is Raw Therapee! AND where is Capture one Pro? To name but two? THen if you own a Sony you get Capture One for Sony free too! It needs to be made clear that LR6 OMITS, I believe the CC versions most valuable feature which is called dehazer or something. When I tried it out it is SO effective results could match Capture One quality-almost, as it certainly gets rid of the deadening effect of antialiasing to make the image look as sharp-almost- as a sans AA machine: a D810 for the cost of a D800 in other words.

In all the discussion, and because it is a critical component for managing what you edit, which of all the so called alternatives do treat the metadata input with proper IPTC captioning fields, such as in Photo Mechanic, Photoshop, or PS Elements. I have found that the file info is sorely lacking, limited to brief EXIF scripts or missing altogether in many of the 'alternative' products, or many of those mentioned in the comments. For the press, agency, or wire domains IPTC metadata is a component that cannot be shirked. Among the long list of alternatives, one might add one of the longest-running entries: Picture Window Pro (now on 7) a Windows-only offering that has been around since 1993. Integrates very well, nice workflow, 32 bit processing and good raw support. Although it is still a developer version is runs well on my win10 box. There is not much I can not do with that combination in comparison to Photoshop. It is different, it has it strengths and weaknesses but at the end of the day, all it counts, it gets the job done.

Appreciate the great community support around Gimp, there are tons of resources available. Faststone Image Viewer - very underrated, yet very capable - and free.

Don't let the lack of a price fool you though. I know of professionals who process all of their raw files, wedding, and studio work with it (it will also bridge to just about any other program such as Photoshop, Exposure, etc). Its raw conversions are based on the extremely powerful DCRaw converter which performs exceptionally well. Another Photoshop 'alternative': you'd be surprised how capable - and inexpensive - an older version of Photoshop (i.e. Version 7.0) is over a decade later. And they run lightning fast on any current machine. Even with these older versions, the ability to literally program and enhance Photoshop through their powerful actions mode is an extremely untapped feature that used creatively, allows one to never have to upgrade.
